Faster and more popular than Nascar, F1 is a global sport that reaches a massive, loyal, international fanbase. So what does that mean for Miami? Mercedes’ British racing driver, Lewis Hamilton, said: “The race can bring 4,000 jobs to communities in Miami. Montreal has always been my favorite to go to but Miami I think that’s going to be the favorite spot to go to.”

F1 president and chief executive officer Stefano Domenicali said: “The US is a key growth market for us, and we are greatly encouraged by our growing reach in the US which will be further supported by this exciting second race.” He added: “We are grateful to our fans, the Miami Gardens elected officials and the local tourism industry for their patience and support throughout this process. We are looking forward to bringing the greatest racing spectacle on the planet to Miami for the first time in our sport’s history.”

Having the Grand Prix race in Miami will boost the economy through tourism and have a positive impact on local businesses in the greater Mami area. Formula 1 will be working closely with the local community ensuring that Miami Gardens residents have access to discounted tickets and the opportunity to experience the thrilling race for themselves. There will also be programs put in place to benefit the community. Local businesses will be able to reap the full benefits of the race being in their town, offering the opportunity to be a part of the race weekend, as well as a STEM education program through F1 in schools.

This race has been in the works for a long time coming. In 2018, a proposal was submitted to the City of Miami for the Miami Grand Prix round of the Formula One World Championship race. 2019 was first proposed as the date for the race. Due to complications with PortMiami’s construction and development, a proposal was submitted for a 2021 race to take place at Hard Rock Stadium. The track was then moved to the Miami International Autodrome on a ten-year contract beginning on May 8 of this year.

The track itself will be 5.41km, featuring three straights, 19 corners, and the potential for three DRS zones. It has an estimated top speed of 320km/h. It has been designed to encourage close racing while meeting the highest of safety standards.

Miami Dolphins chairman Tom Garfinkel, the managing partner of the Miami Grand Prix, said: “We have worked with specialist designers to create a racetrack that we, Formula 1 and the FIA believe will provide great racing and we hope to create best-in-class unique fan experiences that are reflective of the diverse and dynamic nature of Miami.”
